The illy can: another Art Collection project
As with the illy Art Collection cups, illy has brought art into people's daily lives by commissioning artistic interpretation another everyday object, the illy can with its original illy signature design.
In 2006 James Rosenquist, a major figure of Pop Art who designed the current illy logo, decorated the limited edition can with his work “Coffee Flavours Ideas”. The decoration is a reprint of the painting expressing illy and Rosenquist’s shared ideas concerning coffee and how it can bring a smile to people’s faces and generate ideas for creative experiences and warm relationships.
In late 2006, Taiwanese artist Michael Lin decorated espresso and cappuccino cups for the illy Art Collection, then in 2007 created two different designs for the can. His elegant pink and white designs recall the traditional motifs of Chinese and Japanese fabrics, the recurring theme of his artistic inspiration.
The cans come with an easily removable clear plastic sleeve that holds the mandatory printed copy. Once removed, the pristine decorated can is revealed.
